Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is an alternative for women seeking hormone replacement. Bioidentical hormones are manufactured in the lab; however, unlike synthetic HRT, they are made to have the same molecular structure as the hormones made by our body. Although they have been around for many years, it continue to be an uncharted territory for many doctors.

Although there are some branded versions, often covered by insurance, these are formulated as a one-size-fits-all regime and are not suitable for all women. Compounded bioidentical hormones are a better choice. They can be made specifically to fit the needs of the individual woman. These are formulated based on specific laboratory tests (Serum Hormone Analysis), which indicate the actual testosterone, progesterone, total estrogen, sex hormone binding globulin, and DHEA-S levels of the individual.

The advantage of compounded bioidentical hormones is that they are natural, generally made from yams and/or soy. The body is naturally able to metabolize them, eliminating the dreadful side-effects experienced by those who use synthetic HRT. It is important that one receiving bioidentical hormones is properly monitored through regular follow-up hormone panels (lab test) to ensure that they get relief from symptoms at the lowest possible dosage.
Prescriptions for compounded hormones are not likely available at your neighborhood pharmacy. Compounded BHRT must be made by a Compounding Pharmacist, which can be hard to find in some areas. However, they do exist and you may find the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists' web site helpful in your search.
