Fibromyalgia (FM) — Sometimes called fibrositis, Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder that causes pain and stiffness throughout the tissues that support and move the bones and joints. Pain and localized tender points occur in the muscles, particularly those that support the neck, spine, shoulders and hips. Diagnosis of Fibromyalgia involves widespread pain lasting more than three months, tenderness in at least 11 of 18 tender point sites, fatigue and sleep disturbances.

Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS, FM) is one of those mysterious modern ailments that is labeled a "syndrome" because it is characterized by a number of symptoms and lacks a definable cause. The similarities in symptoms and research findings between Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS, CFIDS), and Fibromyalgia have led many researchers and clinicians to link the two syndromes, although others believe them to be quite distinct. In any case, Fibromyalgia appears to be more common than CFS. The U.S. National Institutes of Health estimates that some 3.4 % of women and 0.5% of men over the age of 18 suffer from Fibromyalgia.

Current thinking is that FMS probably begins with a genetic predisposition, and is triggered by exposure to a number of possible stressors - including physical injury or emotional trauma, childbirth, medical operations, viruses, bacteria such as mycoplasma, chronic allergies or chemical toxins. Some researchers suggest that Lyme Disease may be one of the causative factors in both FMS and CFS, and that some FMS and CFS patients are really misdiagnosed chronic Lyme Disease patients.
